Still haven’t gotten a flu shot? Think it’s too late in the season? While this year’s vaccine is not a perfect match for this year’s virus, vaccination can still provide protection and might reduce severe outcomes such as hospitalization. Protecting yourself from flu also protects the people around you who are more vulnerable to serious flu illness. If you have not received the flu vaccine this season, remember, it’s not too late to vaccinate!
Tdap Vaccine (Tetanus, Diphtheria, and Pertussis) ~ What You Need to Know
Tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis can be very serious diseases, even for adolescents and adults. Tdap vaccine can protect us from these diseases.
TETANUS (Lockjaw) causes painful muscle tightening and stiffness. Tetanus kills about 1 out of 5 people who are infected. Tetanus enters the body through cuts, scratches, or wounds. Therefore, it is especially important after a severe cut or burn.
DIPHTHERIA can cause a thick coating to form in the back of the throat. It can lead to breathing problems, paralysis, heart failure.
PERTUSSIS (Whooping Cough) causes severe coughing spells, which can cause difficulty breathing. Infants are most at risk for severe, life-threatening complications from pertussis. Anyone having close contact with babies should be vaccinated.
Preventing Seasonal Flu with Vaccination
Influenza (flu) is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses. It can cause mild to severe illness. Serious outcomes of flu infection can result in hospitalization or death. Some people, such as older people, young children, and people with certain health conditions, are at high risk for serious flu complications. The best way to prevent the flu is by getting vaccinated each year.
